***** NEW FEATURES as of v3.1 release 08/14/2017 ********
Now you can use Google Slides as your template in Autocrat. Merge data from Google Spreadsheets directly into a single Google Slide Presentation.

***** NEW FEATURES as of v3.0 release 05/07/2016 ********

In response to user feedback and demand, the new version of Autocrat now has the following upgrades and new features:

-- A single, simpler user interface. We got rid of the sidebar. Everything happens through the primary dialogue.
 -- More modern design/interface.
-- Cleaner code under the hood. Hopefully you notice faster performance and more reliable triggers.
-- Single document mode. You can now produce a single document for a merge job. E.g. a single doc or PDF, with each row of data that meets your job criteria merged into it. Previously you could only create one document per row of data. This was one of the most asked for feature requests. (NOTE: This only works for docs at the moment, not spreadsheets)
-- Image merge. You can now merge images into your docs from a publicly hosted image URL.
-- Hyperlink merge. Easily add hyperlinks to your merged Google docs.

*****Some key updates that respond to user ratings prior to Oct 1st, 2014 The Add-on's author, Tim Cargan, was supporting it as a volunteer (while attending high school full time). As of late September, 2014 New Visions CloudLab developer Jared Carrano has taken over as lead project maintainer, with Tim continuing on an advisory capacity. As of October 3rd, 2014 the autoCrat Add-on now allows for merges to automatically trigger on Google Form submit. This feature was missing from the original release because Google released Add-ons without support for installable triggers, now possible thanks to the hard work of Google's engineers.

Initially the new single document feature seemed like a great idea. It works fine with their sample template. Unfortunately it does not format our documents correctly. As a workaround we use Autocrat to create multiple pdfs and then merge them with an addon called "Mergy". If they can debug the single document feature so it works reliably I would give it four or five stars.

AutoCrat has grown up! Very nice to use now. Easy to map fields on the document with spreadsheet columns. One suggestion. My merge contains sensitive information. The final confirmation information includes the link sent by email, however when I open the document (in this case a pdf) it does not show this sharing setting. I want to make sure that the link sent requires users to be a member of my domain.

Love the autocrat script, but not fully loving the add-on yet. Can't wait for form submission trigger to work.

I was trying to find a way to notify a specific counselor when a student referral form was submitted through Google Forms. I searched many different options but nothing worked the way I wanted it to. I came across autoCrat and found that it served that purpose and much, much more! It's a great way to turn a form submission into a user-friendly document.

When it works, it works well. However, I've had lots of times where it simply hangs when trying to save settings or run a merge. Not sure why it hangs, but it happens maybe once out of every 5 times when I'm doing a simple mail merge. I've also like to see a new feature. It would be nice to have the option of generating a combined PDF/DOC rather than individual PDF/DOCs for each data entry. This would make it easier to print everything at once.

Scheduling jobs using the time or event triggers doesn't work. It is definitely not a "truly automated process". It would be a great product if they could manage to fix that but it has been broken for over a year so I am not too hopeful. Looking for something else to replace it...

I love Autocrat! I'm a 5th grade teacher and a huge fan. The updates are FANTASTIC! I cannot thank you enough for saving me so much time. One of my favorite ways to use it is to communicate student progress with parents. BIG TIME SAVER! Great add-on!

Of this kind of productivity tool, I like this app the most so far. Sometimes, it exhibits some instabilities or inconsistencies when it comes to opening the document template from the Drive, and setting up the conditions for selecting the rows also have not worked for me (which is not that criticial because one can overcome it by manually filling up the undesired rows by some dummy character), but the most important part works quite well and therefore surpasses some minor glitches.

My use case is a Google Sheet with embedded form which club members use to fill out an event entry form. Autocrat is then used to format their input into a Google Doc which is emailed to them as a PDF attachment. For various reasons they need to print and sign the form and hand it in at the event. The email is also copied to our events secretary for their records. Being new to Autocrat I don't have version 2 baggage and so my comments are as a first time user of version 3.0.0. beta. The main difficulty I encountered was with <<tag>> expansion. Because I'm using a form, the sheet headings are taken from the question, so for example, if your question in the form is labelled "Email Address" then that will be the column heading in the sheet. If in your document template you set a tag <<email>> you can map the column heading to the tag in the job set-up. But - if you try to use that <<tag>> anywhere other than in the document (say in the document filename or in the email address lines, subject or body) it will NOT be expanded. After nearly giving up on Autocrat and trying a different plug-in, I went back to Autocrat and changed my tags - so instead of using <<email>>, I used <<Email Address>> - that is, I used EXACTLY the same text in the tag as the sheet. And my <<tag>> expansion in the email now works. My expectation was a mapped <<tag>> should work anywhere, so I think this is a bug or "undocumented feature" but there is a simple work-around once you know it. Second - if you modify your form structure and save it, under some circumstances Autocrat deletes the existing merge job, so you have to build it again. Not too much of a problem EXCEPT it wipes out your email template as well, and that can be a hassle to rebuild if you haven't saved a copy of it somewhere else. Again, once you know about this, you can work around it by building your email template separately and then pasting the material into the fields, but it would be good if Autocrat let you save and re-use the email template you build in the interface. Notwithstanding the above, I'm impressed - I was not looking forward to trying to develop my own code to do this job, and I can see other potential uses for this plug-in.
