Overview
Paste a passage into a Google Docs™ document, choose how you want the gaps made, and get a worksheet and an answer key added at the end. Your own text is left exactly as it was.

WHY THIS ONE

Most cloze tools split words on spaces. Japanese has none, so they either fail or cut words in half. This one runs proper morphological analysis, so 日本語教育 stays whole and 座った is recognised as a form of 座る. For Korean, particles are split from the words they follow, so 식탁은 gives 식탁 and 은, and a particle drill works in Korean too.

CHOOSE WHICH WORDS

- Any word worth learning. Particles and auxiliaries are left alone, because a gap on は teaches nothing in a vocabulary exercise.
- One type of word: particles, verbs, nouns, adjectives or adverbs. A particle drill and a vocabulary drill are different lessons.
- Words above your class level: choose a JLPT level from N5 to N1, and only the harder words become gaps. Japanese only.

CHOOSE HOW MANY

- Evenly spaced: one in every 1 to 10.
- Scattered: the same number of gaps, in unpredictable places, so a class cannot work out the rhythm and stop reading.
- All of them.

The two choices combine, so "every second particle" and "all the verbs, scattered" are both a click away.

ALSO

- Compounds are kept whole. 操作 + する + こと becomes one gap, not three.
- Punctuation, line breaks and paragraphs survive exactly as they were.
- Works in English and other languages written with spaces, too.

FREE PLAN

300 words at a time, 10 worksheets a month.

A NOTE ON DIFFICULTY LEVELS

No official vocabulary list exists for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. Where levels are shown, they come from a publicly available list by Jonathan Waller and are an informed estimate, not an official standard. We are not affiliated with the test organisers.
