Overview
Google Docs don't allow you to automatically insert endnotes while writing. This AddOn converts any footnotes you have into endnotes and adds them to the end of the document in order.

** Important note on usage**
When your endnotes are created, the original footnote references are lost. This means you cannot go back and add footnotes and rerun the Addon. If you need to edit after you create the endnotes (adding footnotes, in particular) you need to revert to a previous version to restore the footnotes.

Recent updates:

v0.6.1 If you have custom formatting in your footnotes, that formatting is maintained when you create the endnotes. If you have line breaks in your footnotes, only the first paragraph's formatting is kept.

v0.6 Creating endnotes will now add cross-referenced links. Endnotes also handle images correctly. Thanks to merlinran for providing this update!

Having been working for many years (though I've had to use the workaround mentioned in other reviews for organisation documents), the extension now simply isn't working - as in, clicking the 'Generate' button does absolutely nothing. Any ideas?

Read some reviews that this wasn't working and one that pointed to a workaround where you made the doc editable by anyone with the link. (That workaround is not ideal of course.) I just decided to give it a shot anyway, and it worked perfectly fine for me without using the workaround. (My doc wasn't shared with anyone.) Can't say why it wasn't working for others except maybe that they were trying to use it in a Google Workspace account—that is, an account that belongs to a school or company. It's very common for Workspace Admin to restrict add-ons in that context. Thanks to the developer for working on this! Very helpful. One improvement: You're supposed to run the script when you're "done" with your footnotes because it "reset your citations to 0, meaning you can't insert footnotes in order" anymore. That obviously makes future edits to your doc a challenge.

One more person who wasn't able to make it work here, but I think I found the workaround: I changed the permissions of the document to be 'all with a link can edit' and opened it from a *non institutional* account. Ran the script and it worked like charm. I bet it has something to do with universities / institutions permissions etc. Hope that helps. (It's still annoying so please find a solution!!!!)

This is a helpful app that I use frequently. I preferred the version that did not include active links between the footnote numeral and the footnote itself. It would be a welcome addition to have the footnotes denoted as "[1]" instead of "1". Thanks!
