Overview
Fountainize lets you write simple text and convert it into a beautifully formatted script all with the press of a button. Collaborative screenwriting has never been this easy!

Fountainize is based on the Fountain markup language. By writing your text following a simple set of rules, Fountainize is able to determine what should be a character, dialogue, action, or any other part of a script. Don't worry though! The rules are easy. For example:

Character: Write in all caps, ex. SAMANTHA
Scene: Start the line with 'int.' or 'ext.' (no quotations of course!)
Dialogue: The line after a character or parenthetical is always considered dialogue

See? The rules are designed to speed up your workflow and let Fountainize do the dirty work for you. Whenever you feel like turning your text into screenplay, just hit the button and voila! It's done.

Fountainize was built specifically so you can reap all the benefits of Google Docs while still making professional looking screenplays. Now, Fountainize won't replace professional screenwriting software (it doesn't do continued dialogue or exceptions to rules*) but it is the BEST tool for efficiently writing drafts or personal projects. And of course, working with friends!

Happy writing!

I've decided to stop using Final Draft for the first time since I started using it in 2003 and I've been looking for a replacement for months now; I cannot justify the prices of scriptwriting software, especially when you factor in exchange rates and with acknowledgment to new monthly subscriptions. End of the day all I'm using it for is to write screenplays, for which I require the industry standard formatting and the ability to import into third-party applications for production management. When I heard about Fountainize and the idea of writing in Google Docs, I admittedly found the idea laughable but after all the searching I certainly appreciated something that could capitalize on Google Drive collaboration, it seemed like a bold concept that would easily be overlooked. I found myself VERY quickly adapting to the Fountain Format (since Final Draft pretty much does everything for you), and I loved the freedom and speed it allowed me to write at, while simultaneously working with my third-party applications for spelling and grammar (I'm dyslexic). As it turns out, this is one of the best out there and certainly worth a $10-20 price tag. I see a tremendous amount of unfair complaints in the comments, but this is definitely working well on my side and is definitely worth a try. I hope there will be ongoing support and development on this, I'm here for it.

I love it. I recommend it to other script writers. It works perfect for me since I'm already a huge fan of Google Docs. I don't understand how anyone could lose their work using Fountainize in Google Docs. Docs automatically saves your work so you never have to hit save.

Poor communication: Multiple people have asked for assistance re how to display Fountainize in Google Docs after downloading add-on into android device. No adequate response to multiple requests. Fountainize doesn't display in the "Add-ons: drop down menu in a Google Doc. The Uninstall button does display on this webpage so it's apparent that the Fountainize add-on was installed. Uninstalling Fountainize now...

Had a different add-on at first so I was initially iffy to select this one after the previous crashed. Took getting used to and eventually became easy to understand but I've been getting very frustrated with it and am considering deleting. "Format Screenplay" button just isn't working despite everything being formatted according to the instructions and after countless attempts it eventually ruins my entire screenplay format. It's extremely angering and discouraging. Needs improvement.

I am a complete dunce when it comes to loading these things correctly but I tried it. Once I started writing my screen play I clicked add on and was pleased with the formate. I was about two pages in and going good but then I couldn't locate where to save the work so I figured it must have an auto save. WRONG I had a power outage and when I went back in what I had written was GONE. I was so upset. Haven't gone back on yet but I guess I should try again.

The free version of the app is totally useless. I couldn't figure out how to do much of anything with the features that were presented. And I'm still stuck with the same problem : manually dragging my margin markers to format the rest of my script. (The add-on I was previously using, just disappeared, 32 pages in.)

I have been installing this Add-on onto Google Docs and it is not showing up at all in my list of add-ons. What is going on?

My experience using this add-on is absolutely splendid. I actually find it a smoother and more enjoyable experience to write in the structure specified in the instructions than writing straight into the script format. Being able to use Google Docs' simple collaboration features with my script-writing has made my experience with Fountanize quite an exceptional one. I did spot a minor bug while using the sidebar Fountanize button. Unlike the 'Format Script' option you can press on the dropdown menu, the button on the sidebar moves the margin bar to the right by .50 inches. I'm not exactly sure if I am referring to the part of the margin bar correctly, but I hope you can try it out yourself and spot the bug. Based on how quickly you answer your reviews, I am sure that you will squash this bug in no time. Thank you for an amazing add on. Hopefully, you can add more useful features in the future(eg. cont'd, more, capitalized dialogue for lyrics, dual dialogue)!

I am a big fan of Google Docs, so this is a great plugin for it that really just focusses on screen play writing. It's the only solution that I have found that takes advantage of a true dark mode (no white borders and such)...great for my eyes. My only complaint is to add some feature where the character and their dialog is never split at a page boundary. If the dialog does not fit on the same page as the character, then both should put on the next page.

Maybe the add-on author can answer my question - If you start a script, then click "format script", it formats it as expected. If you make any revisions or additions to that script, those changes ignore any subsequent "format script" command. So do you need to clear all formatting and then click "format script" after every change to the script? If this is by design, it feels rather unwieldy. Is there some way for alterations to be flagged for format so that when you click "format script", the program knows enough to apply formatting only to what has changed? If not, could you build in a "clear all formatting" call automatically when "format script" is clicked to force a format of the entire script? Or perhaps only format what is selected?
