The Goal Seek add-on for Google Sheetsᵀᴹ enables users to calculate the required value of a cell to achieve a desired formula value in another cell.
Listing updated:May 11, 2023
Works with:
2M+
Overview
If you know the result you need from a formula, you can use the Goal Seek add-on to find the missing value needed to achieve it.
You can use the add-on to conduct break-even analysis, or determine subcomponent targets when modeling future outcomes. You can also modify parameters, like max iterations, tolerance and max execution time that Goal Seek uses to determine a solution or load previous calculations.

There are three components to configure:
- the target value
- the changing cell (where the formula is)
- the output value to achieve

I wish it worked, but it kept crashing when I needed it in a pinch. Please investigate and work on a bug fix.

Goal seek isn't willing to try large movements of the starting number to change the outcome. I'm trying to do mortgage calculations to determine at what price a property would be profitable. The needed changes in purchase price would be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. This add-in changed the purchase price by a couple dollars in each direction, did five iterations, and came back saying it "Failed to progress toward solution" and wouldn't try again.

This thing works, but scaling to a whole table is not supported. Another thing, the target value should be able to be dynamic. We're spreadsheeting here, come on!

Chris Kim's solution of clicking the green cell picker made this solver work again for me. It's not exactly fast, but it gets the job done for simple goals. It's OK.

Still not working... I made it work a year ago. It was pretty slow but got the job done. I think it would be nice to implement a free simple version by default, or offer it as a macro by default. There are plenty of work-arounds though, just google "Dynamic Goal Seek Sheet" and you will find how to do it yourself... one day Google will be able to do it too :D :D

It works. People just don't know how to use it correctly. For "Set Cell," and "By Changing Cell," you need to click on the cell with the number you want to add then CLICK on the 'capture target cell' button that's in the shape of 4 green squares. It'll then add the cell you had selected. Do the same for "By Changing Cell." For "To Value," you just need to type it in. Do not type in the values for "Set Cell," and "By Changing Cell." It won't work.

Can't get it to work at all, no matter what I try. I'm not trying to do anything super complicated. Update: I tried incognito window as others suggested. I got it to go a little farther. Intead of failing at startup, I was able to make inputs and press solve, but I got the critical error: "Could not read or write data for the selected Set or Target cell. Please check your inputs and try again." There's no particular reason I can think of why these cells should be unreadable or unwritable. When I make my own scripts, they work just find with reading and writing in this setting.
