GridShell puts a real terminal inside your Google Sheets™ spreadsheet. Not a chat box - an actual shell, so you can point any MCP-compatible AI CLI agent (Claude™ Code, Antigravity™, Codex™, OpenCode™, and others), or a plain Python script/REPL, directly at your live sheet - the same tools you already work in, now with a live connection to the spreadsheet itself. WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH IT: - Read and write ranges, values, and formulas - Apply formatting and conditional formatting - Build charts and pivot tables - Batch many operations into a single call instead of one round trip per cell - Drive the same live connection from a Python REPL or script (pandas-friendly) - no agent required GETTING STARTED: The add-on itself is the in-Sheets terminal UI. It talks to a server that does the actual work, installed separately as a Python package. Generally it requires a one-time setup: install the add-on, install and start the server, open the sidebar, and configure the server connection (address and the auth token it generates for you) in Settings. Now you can open a shell. To run an agent against the spreadsheet, point it at the MCP server installed with the same Python package. Full setup instructions: https://gridshell.app WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone comfortable working on a spreadsheet through a terminal, but who still wants the interactivity of an in-Sheets chat window. WHY CHOOSE GRIDSHELL: - A real terminal, not a chat wrapper - works with whatever agent or script you already use - Iterative by design - build a spreadsheet up in stages through a live back-and-forth, rather than one-shot generation - Extendable - the backend is open, so you can add your own tools on top rather than being limited to what ships out of the box - No AI vendor lock-in - GridShell never calls a model itself, it's the bridge - CLI agent flexibility - you're in full control of the agent's settings, instructions, and tools SECURITY AND CONTROL: - The backend is open source (MIT) - nothing about what it does is hidden or has to be taken on faith - Self-hosted by default - you control where the server runs, your machine or your own remote host - Restricted by default when working with an AI agent: functions that can leak data or pull in external content (e.g. IMPORTDATA) are blocked unless you turn them off yourself - Token-based authentication on every connection - each server generates and stores its own token locally; there's no account or credential GridShell issues or holds PRICING: This version of GridShell is free, with a few things reserved for a future paid tier. The limitations are: max 2 simultaneous shells per sheet, and no advanced cosmetic styling (custom chart styling, conditional-formatting colors, spreadsheet themes/branding, and sharing/protection controls).
