JSON for Google Sheets™ is a JSON import, transformation, refresh, and export add-on that turns JSON from files, cells, URLs, and APIs into structured spreadsheet tables.

Import JSON from multiple sources

• Paste JSON directly into the sidebar.
• Read JSON stored in a cell in the current spreadsheet.
• Open a local .json file up to 5 MB.
• Import fresh JSON from a public URL.
• Connect to authenticated JSON APIs.
• Convert supported cURL commands into editable API requests.

Local files are parsed within the add-on and are not uploaded to JSON for Sheets servers. Local files, pasted JSON, spreadsheet formulas, and exports do not consume remote-fetch allowances.

Build JSON API requests

Create GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE requests with:

• Query parameters
• Non-secret request headers
• JSON and form-encoded request bodies
• Spreadsheet-cell variables
• Encrypted API credentials
• Page-number pagination
• Offset-and-limit pagination
• Cursor pagination
• Response-provided next URLs

Spreadsheet variables such as {{customer_id}} can be connected to cells and used in URLs, query parameters, paths, headers, and request bodies. The current cell value is read again whenever the request runs.

JSON for Google Sheets™ does not cache remote JSON responses. Every preview, manual refresh, and scheduled refresh requests fresh data from the configured source.

Preview and transform JSON

Inspect the result before changing the spreadsheet. JSON for Google Sheets™ lets you:

• Choose a root object or array.
• Search and select output fields.
• Preview rows, columns, and representative values.
• Flatten nested objects into structured columns.
• Choose how nested arrays become rows or cell values.
• Preserve booleans, numbers, text, null values, and large numeric identifiers safely.
• Review row and column limits before writing.

Write data safely

Write the resulting table at the selected cell or create a new sheet. Supported write modes include:

• Replace the managed output table.
• Append new rows.
• Update existing records and append new records using a selected unique key.

Managed output ranges help ensure that refreshes update the intended table. Replace operations write the new result before clearing stale trailing cells, reducing the risk of losing an existing table if a write fails.

Formula-injection protection is enabled by default. Imported text beginning with characters such as =, +, -, or @ is treated as text instead of being executed as a spreadsheet formula.

Use JSON spreadsheet functions

JSON for Google Sheets™ includes local spreadsheet functions for working with JSON already stored in cells:

• JSON_VALUE — return one scalar value from a path.
• JSON_QUERY — return an object or array as JSON text.
• JSON_KEYS — list keys from an object.
• JSON_LENGTH — return an array length or object-key count.
• JSON_TYPE — identify a JSON value type.
• JSON_VALID — check whether text is valid JSON.
• JSON_PRETTY — format JSON for readability.
• JSON_MINIFY — compact JSON text.
• JSON_FLATTEN — expand nested JSON into columns.
• JSON_TABLE — turn JSON into a spillable table.
• JSON_SCHEMA — inspect discovered fields and data types.
• TABLE_TO_JSON — convert a spreadsheet range into JSON.

These local functions do not make remote API requests and do not consume remote-fetch allowances. Remote URL imports are intentionally performed through the sidebar instead of a metered spreadsheet formula.

Save and refresh imports

Save remote imports with their request configuration, selected fields, destination, write mode, spreadsheet variables, pagination settings, and encrypted connection reference.

Saved imports can be:

• Run again on demand.
• Updated with fresh spreadsheet-variable values.
• Deleted without deleting the spreadsheet data.
• Scheduled for automatic refresh on eligible paid plans.

Starter supports daily and weekly automatic refreshes. Pro supports hourly, daily, and weekly automatic refreshes. Authorized schedules can continue while the spreadsheet is closed, subject to Google Apps Script and product execution limits.

Export spreadsheet ranges as JSON

Select a spreadsheet table and convert it into structured JSON. Supported output shapes include arrays of objects, keyed records, and row arrays.

The exporter can:

• Use the first row as property names.
• Preserve supported spreadsheet value types.
• Reconstruct nested objects from dotted headers.
• Pretty-print or compact the generated JSON.
• Copy the generated JSON to the clipboard.

The current release copies generated JSON to the clipboard. It does not include a direct .json file-download button.

Encrypted API connections

Save API credentials without placing them in spreadsheet cells, formulas, URLs, or saved request metadata. Supported connection types include:

• Bearer tokens
• API keys in named headers
• API keys in named query parameters
• HTTP Basic usernames and passwords
• Custom secret headers

Saved credentials are encrypted and are not returned to the add-on after they are stored. The add-on displays only the connection name, type, and masked metadata. Delete and recreate a connection when a credential needs to be rotated.

Remote-request protections

Remote imports include protections against private and reserved network destinations, embedded URL credentials, unsafe redirects, oversized responses, decompression bombs, excessive pagination, and long-running requests.

Saved credentials remain limited to the configured API origin. Credentials, caller headers, and request bodies are removed before following a cross-origin redirect. Response-provided next-page URLs cannot send credentials to another origin.

One successful API response or pagination page counts as one remote fetch. Blocked URLs, network failures, timeouts, upstream errors, oversized responses, and invalid JSON do not consume a fetch.

Subscriptions and cancellation

Starter and Pro are recurring subscriptions that renew automatically until canceled. Monthly subscriptions renew monthly, and annual subscriptions renew annually.
