Mail Merge lets you create a batch of documents that are personalized for each recipient. For example, a form letter might be personalized to address each recipient by name. A data source, like a Google Sheets ™ spreadsheet is associated with the document. Placeholders--called merge fields--tell Google Docs ™ where in the document to include information from the data source. That way, it’s possible to mail merge emails, letters, envelopes or labels.


1. Open Google Docs ™ (
2. Create a template document. For example, create an empty invoice template or a student grade report.
3. Click on the Mail Merge button in the sidebar on the right
4. Choose the document type (letters, envelopes, labels, emails)
5. Select recipients. In the sidebar, choose which spreadsheet you want to pull data from
6. Insert merge fields to personalize each document
7. Generate your documents
8. Download your documents as Docs, PDF or Word


It’s quite the same as mail merging documents from Google Docs ™. Let’s see how to merge data from Google Sheets ™ to Google Docs ™: 

1. Open Google Sheets ™ (
2. Click on the Mail Merge button in the sidebar on the right
3. Choose the document you want to merge. Make sure to create a template document beforehand. For example, create an empty invoice template or a student grade report in Google Docs ™.
4. Choose the document type (letters, envelopes, labels, emails). The recipients will be the people listed in your current tab in Google Sheets ™.
5. Generate your documents
6. Download your documents as Docs, PDF or Word

Don't waste your time. Used once, "OH SNAP! We could not merge your document. This might happen when your document is too heavy or has too many formattings applied. Please edit your document and try again." Yeahhh... it's a letter. Thanks for nothing.

I installed it to make labels - but it says to install the other add on: "Create & print labels" ! What a joke! I had already tried, and uninstalled that one, which says Free - but is only free for one week.

It used to work. Now it's not working at all. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it now I can't even get the toolbar to show. Before I uninstalled it I was getting the "oh snap" error. Incredibly frustrating.

Works great with Foxy Lable maker. The one it suggested to use was "expired" so no way to use it. I merged 11,500 docs and labels from sheeets, with no issues.

The extension works only for simple documents and a really small number of rows in the list. Produces a single document with all the generated pages. No option for individual output documents for each row. Ruins some of the formatting: 1. inline images get broken (replaced with a question triangle); 2. numbered list looses numbers. Tried to generate about 400 instances of a 4-paged document. It failed, perhapse because of memory overflow. No meaningful error message.

It works in a fashion but if the template has numbered paragraphs they are deleted during the merge meaning the finished letters are missing chunks of text. Not great and could be overlooked. NEEDS FIXING - this was reported a year ago.

Such clever code! It's efficient to use, works well for docs merge and email merge projects. Simple user interface, intuitive functionality, reliable and clear. Google does this kind of thing so well. Thanks to the whole team for a job very well done.

A merge preview button would help to review the template, merge field data cell formats. Agree with a previous comment on editing a subject line, as well as intuitively adding a cc: bcc: field.

There does not appear to be a way to edit the subject line or allow you to edit the merge fields. Outside of that, this worked really well for me to send a lot of emails rather quickly.

Once again, another app for Google Docs attempts to replicate the merge feature of MS Word, but it falls short of expectations and never matches the performance of the original. If you want to create truly professional documents, sadly Google, once again, doesn't provide a business solution like Microsoft.
