Overview
Send randomized quizzes to students from a question bank you create in Forms. Students retake until mastery!
Mastery learning is the teaching strategy and philosophy that students must achieve a level of mastery (e.g 90% on a test) in a content area before moving forward to subsequent information. If a student does not achieve mastery, they are given support in learning and tested again. This cycle continues until the learner accomplishes mastery. Mastery Quiz is a Google Sheets Add-On that combines Google Forms, Classroom, Gmail, and the philosophy of Mastery-based learning!

With this Add-On, distribute randomly generated quizzes to each student in a Google Class, drawing from any question bank you can create in Google Forms. Students will see their quizzes appear on the Google Classroom. If a student does not score high enough, they are sent a new, randomized quiz to try again! This cycle continues until the student achieves mastery.

All you have to do is create a question bank and hit send! No grading, re-writing tests, scheduling retakes, or losing papers!

Teachers can choose any Google Forms question bank in their Drive! Can include images for questions by placing them immediately before the question in the question bank. Teachers can also choose how long each quiz is, and what scores counts as passing according to a 4-point scale.

With a question bank of 20 questions, using randomly generated 6 question quizzes, students have less than a 0.0005% chance of getting the same quiz again!

Mastery Quiz is a valuable tool for any teacher who believes in Mastery learning!

This add-on has been a help to me during this year of hybrid education. A few things that would make it much more user friendly: 1) the ability to either save work as a draft during set-up, or to schedule when the assignment is posted in Classroom...it's preferable to have more control over when a quiz pops up for students, and often, I'm in a situation where I want it to show up for them at the beginning or end of a class, not randomly throughout the day. 2) An easy way to see raw class data (on one screen), primarily the # of correct questions a student answers out of the number of questions given. 3) A cleaner "roster" worksheet on the main Google Sheet. There is a lot of info that I am sure is needed for this add-on to work, but isn't necessary for the user to view

The concept behind this app is noble. However, it fails to deliver what it claims. The first time I used it, it worked well. It has not worked since despite multiple attempts. Specifically, some students received the link, while others did not. When accessing the quiz on GC only 2 of 25 students were able to see the link once they opened the spreadsheet. And, those that could access the link only had 6 questions when I selected 25 from the original spreadsheet. Additionally, the few who could complete the quiz received the message that all their answers were incorrect even though all questions had answers selected on the original form. Too many issues to be of any use to anyone. What teacher has the time to figure this unworthy program out? Certainly not this one.

This looked to be really useful. But, the 2nd time I tried it, it somehow mixed my students (in NJ) with some other user's students (in Chicago). So, I (and my students) all of a sudden had visibility into users at muchincollegeprep. I'm not sure why, but I assume that this means too that my students can all of a sudden be exposed elsewhere.

To clarify, this was a unique event that resulted from my template files being edited by someone other than me. This was the first time this has happened. The original template file had a privacy setting "Open to the web", which allowed this add on to copy it for users to use. A teacher got into this original template file and overwrote it with their roster. I am not sure how the teacher found my template file. The program has been updated in such a way that it no longer copies from a template spreadsheet for students. This template information is now coded into the script, it does not come from a second spreadsheet. This problem cannot happen again.

I found the error. The teacher from Chicago edited the student facing spreadsheet template, and used this to run their Mastery Quizzes. This replaced the student facing template with their roster. Thankfully, no one else's class information has or can be been shared. I'll be working on a solution to this today. All quiz assignments that have been already made will still function, but no new quizzes can be assigned by the program until this is fixed.

I absolutely love this! It's pretty easy to use and the auto-grade feature is such a time saving feature.

So easy to use! Its such a game-changer for using google forms quizzes. I love that you can kick quizzes back to students to retry them. You can also see how many times a student tried a quiz, which you can share with parents and counselors as evidence of how much work they are putting into the class.
