Stellar MD Editor is a refreshingly simple, free editor for plain-text (.txt) and Markdown (.md) files stored in Google Drive™. It opens your file in a clean, distraction-free window, lets you edit it, and saves it straight back to the same file.

It is a plain-text editor by design: you see and edit the Markdown source exactly as it is written, and the file is saved back as plain text. There is no formatted preview inside the editor; your Markdown renders wherever the file is viewed or published (websites, wikis, and other apps that display Markdown).

HOW TO USE IT

1. Install the app.
2. In Google Drive™, right-click a .txt or .md file, choose "Open with", then "Stellar MD Editor".
3. Edit the text. A dot next to the file name marks unsaved changes.
4. Click Save or press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac). "Saved to Drive" appears next to the Save button, and your changes are written back to the same file in your Google Drive™. Open the file again at any time to continue where you left off.
5. To rename the file, click its name at the top, type a new name, and press Enter.
6. To create a new file, use the Google Drive™ "New" menu ("New", then "More", then "Stellar MD Editor"); an Untitled.md file is created in the current folder.
7. Optional: to open files with a double-click instead of the right-click menu, open the Google Drive™ settings ("Manage apps") and tick "Use by default" next to Stellar MD Editor.

FEATURES

PRIVACY AND PERMISSIONS

Stellar MD Editor works with per-file access (the drive.file permission): it can only read and edit the individual files you open with it or create through it. It cannot see, list, or search the rest of your Google Drive™, and it cannot access your email or anything else in your account. The install permission (drive.install) does one thing: it adds the app to the "Open with" menu in Google Drive™.

The app has no servers of its own: your text moves only between your browser and Google Drive™. No analytics, no tracking, no cookies, no accounts. Free for life.
