Google Docs™ still cannot alphabetise a list. Alphabetize does it, on exactly the lines you selected, and it shows you the result before it touches your document.

BUILT NOT TO RUIN YOUR DOCUMENT

Sorting tools in Google Docs™ have a bad history. The one this replaces was loved and then abandoned, and its reviews are a list of accidents: text destroyed with no copy to fall back on, tables left with their columns shuffled apart, paragraphs merged into each other. Every rule below exists because of one of them:

• It only ever changes what you selected. With nothing selected, it does nothing at all.
• A table row is one unit. Cells are never sorted independently of the row they belong to.
• Your text is rewritten in place, so the structure of the document survives.
• You see the outcome before it happens, and you can undo it afterwards.

ONE PERMISSION, AND NOTHING LEAVES GOOGLE

Alphabetize asks for exactly one permission: access to the document you currently have open. Not your other documents. Not your Drive. Nothing in Gmail, Calendar or your contacts.

It runs entirely inside Google Apps Script™. There is no server of ours, no database, no analytics and no tracking. Your selected lines are read into memory to sort them and discarded afterwards. Nothing is transmitted to us, because there is nowhere for it to be transmitted to.

HOW TO USE IT

1. Install, then open any Google Docs™ document.
2. Select the lines, list items or table rows you want in order.
3. Open Alphabetize from the side panel on the right.
4. Check the preview, then press Sort. Changed your mind? Press Undo.
