Overview
Read Aloud uses text-to-speech (TTS) technology to convert text to audio, allowing you to listen to your documents for proofreading, for reasons of dyslexia or other learning disabilities. Supports 36 languages.

You can activate this addon from the Addon menu inside Google Docs™.  Once activated, a sidebar appears in which you can pick a voice, set the reading speed, and start the speech.

As of 4/2/25, works great for me on PC in Chrome, the reviews here are misleading or mayeb just outdated? Others are saying it doesn't work, but if it helps ANYONE, you have to go to the top of your Google Doc, click Extensions, click "ReadAloud TTS," click "Open Sidebar" and the Read Aloud sidebar will open on the right side within your google doc, that has a note with a blue-text-link that you have to click and it works! The note explains something about keeping the sidebar open in order to use the extension but then incorrectly tells you if you want to use the older version or something, you have to click a link or something that doesn't make sense. Clicking that link is the only thing you can do and once you click it it works, and it works great and completely free (unlike the other 2-3 "free" TTS extensions I saw available). You just highlight and press play, you can pick a language, voice, speed, and pitch too.

Works on my machine but the voice is too robotic. I'll just use the MS Word app's read-aloud feature on my phone.

This extension does the job. It's all I need, it does what it says, and that's all I ask for. Thank you, as well, for making this essential service actually free. Quality is just fine, its rather robotic but I don't need fancy realistic imitations.

really helpful!! simple tool that gets the job done, plus its free. You can change speed and pitch, plus there are plenty of voices to pick from if you just need documents/ articles read for you.

I use this a lot for proofreading and it gets the job done. The interface is a bit clunky, though, and the voice options could really use an overhaul, considering what's out there nowadays. But for a free app that helps me catch little errors or redundancies in my writing, it's serviceable.
